June 20, 2006  New limits on Calcasieu Lake. The limit for speckled trout on Calcasieu have been reduced to 15 fish per person. All other limits are the same.

Whether you are looking for the excitement of chasing a tailing redfish or the monster trout that Calcasieu Lake is known for, you've come to the right spot.

We are located in beautiful southwest Louisiana and fish the great Calcasieu Lake Estuary (locally known as Big Lake) which is 2 1/2 hours east of Houston, 3 1/2 hours south of Shreveport and 3 hours west of New Orleans. We offer options from sight fishing for redfish with flies or light tackle, to fishing the reefs in the area lakes and bays for redfish, speckle trout and flounder.

Speckle Trout

If you're looking for a wall hanger, Calcasieu Lake is the definitely the place to be. The limit on trout is 15 fish per person daily bag limit; 12 inches minimum with no more than two (2)  exceeding 25 inches total length. We encourage anglers to release any big trout that they do not plan to send to the taxidermist for mounting. Conservation is practiced by all of the guides on the lake and is one of the reasons Calcasieu Lake is so special.

Our fishing season starts each year in April and lasts until November or December depending on the weather. April through June is the time of year for the big trout (5-9 lb.) to be in the lake. July thru early September is when the school trout start moving in (1-4 lb.) and there are some birds picking over the schools as they feed on shrimp and shad. September through November or December is the time of year when the birds really start picking and the school trout are throughout the estuary.

Redfish

Quality redfish are available year-round, but is usually better May and June and then starting in September until we get some big cold fronts in. Redfish limits are 16 inches minimum total length. 5 fish per person daily bag limit with not more than one exceeding 27 inches.

Flounder

Flounder pretty well follow the same pattern as redfish, but by far the best fishing is in the fall. Flounder limits are 10 fish per person per day.

Our guides

All of our guides are United States Coast Guard and Louisiana licensed and have years of experience fishing the lake. All of our boats are 22 to 24 foot in length.

Trips

For morning trips, we like to leave the launch site at safe light to take advantage of the early morning tailing red fish and fish until 2:00 or 3:00; 1/2 day trips return at 10:00. 1/2 day afternoon trips leave the dock around 3:30 and fish until dark.

We can arrange for accommodations or check our Directions Page for local motels and other lodging.
